Well pump replacement cost

Angi's 2026 data puts the national average well pump replacement at $1,897, with most homeowners paying $973 to $2,822. HomeGuide lists a submersible pump at $1,000 to $2,500 installed. These are typical national estimates, not Kankakee quotes; well depth, pump type and the contractor move the price, so get a written estimate.

Cost by well depth

Depth is the biggest single factor. Deeper wells need a stronger pump, more drop pipe and wire, and more labor to pull the old pump. Angi's 2026 ranges:

  • Under 25 feet: $400–$3,000+
  • 25 to 150 feet: $1,200–$5,500+
  • Over 150 feet: $2,000–$10,000+

Most Kankakee-area private wells draw from dolomite bedrock (Illinois State Water Survey), and depths vary well to well. Your well's depth may be on its drilling record; the Illinois State Geological Survey ILWATER map lists many Illinois well records.

Submersible pump replacement

Submersible pumps sit down inside the well and are the most common type for deeper wells (HomeGuide). Replacing one means pulling the pump, drop pipe and wire up out of the casing, so labor and equipment make up a large share of the bill. HomeGuide puts the pump unit alone at $150–$1,700 and a typical replacement at about 3 to 6 hours, longer for deep or hard-to-reach wells.

Repair or replace?

Many no-water calls turn out to be a part, not the pump. HomeGuide's national ranges for common parts:

  • Pressure switch: $25–$100
  • Tank bladder: $50–$100
  • Pressure tank: $500–$1,000
  • Pump motor: $500–$1,000

Ask the contractor to test the switch, control box and tank before pulling the pump. See pressure tank and switch repair and no water from your well for the symptoms that point to each part. HomeGuide notes a pump typically lasts 10 to 15 years, so age matters when you weigh a repair against a replacement.

What else can move the price

  • Labor: Angi lists $250–$1,000 for replacement labor, and $45–$150 an hour for a well pump contractor.
  • Pipe and wiring: new pipework and electrical work can add $250–$1,000 in labor (Angi).
  • Switching pump type: going from a jet pump to a submersible usually means new pipework too.
  • Timing: ask whether after-hours or weekend service is priced differently.
  • Permits and disinfection: ask what the contractor handles, and test the water after any well work (how to test in Kankakee County).

Questions to ask before you sign

  • What did you test, and why do you think the pump itself has failed?
  • What size and type of pump do you recommend for my well depth and household?
  • Does the price include pulling and resetting, new pipe or wire, the check valve, disinfection and haul-away?
  • What warranty comes with the pump and the labor?
  • Can I have the estimate in writing?

Questions

Common questions

How much does it cost to replace a well pump?

Angi's 2026 national average is $1,897, and most homeowners pay $973 to $2,822. These are national estimates, not Kankakee quotes. Get a written estimate from a local contractor.

How much does a submersible well pump replacement cost?

HomeGuide lists $1,000 to $2,500 installed, nationally. Deep wells, larger pumps, and new pipe or wire push the price up.

How much does well pump repair cost compared to replacement?

Replacing a part is often far cheaper. HomeGuide lists a pressure switch at $25 to $100 and a pressure tank at $500 to $1,000, against $1,000 to $2,500 for a submersible pump. Ask the contractor to test those parts first.

Does well depth change the cost?

Yes. Angi's ranges run from $400 to $3,000+ for wells under 25 feet to $2,000 to $10,000+ for wells over 150 feet.

How long does a well pump last?

HomeGuide puts typical pump life at 10 to 15 years with proper care.

Can you tell me what my replacement will cost?

No. We are a referral service and do not quote prices. The independent contractor we refer you to inspects the system and gives you their own estimate.
